A Day in the Life at Talis, with our EdTech Success Consultant, Matthew Weldon

Welcome, Matthew! Tell us about your new role?
I’ve recently joined Talis as EdTech Success Consultant. In this role, I’m focused on working with Talis Elevate users across institutions, providing pedagogic support to ensure staff and students get the most out of Elevate.
What does your typical day look like?
I’ve been at Talis for a few months now, and I’ve quickly realised there is no such thing as a typical day! I like to get started with a coffee while I check emails and catch up on messages from colleagues. Then, I could be doing any number of things: catching up with Elevate users from different institutions and talking about how we support them, putting together resources to help users get started with social annotation, or contributing to upcoming events that Talis are hosting.
What excites you most about your job at Talis?
Getting to work with so many people from across so many different institutions and making a difference. I’m constantly learning, always hearing new suggestions and ideas from our community of Elevate users, and always finding new challenges. No two days are ever the same!
Explain what sort of a company Talis is to work for?
Talis has such a great culture – I’ve felt so welcomed by everyone since I joined, and everyone has been great at answering my many questions! On top of that, we have flexible hours and a great habit of being open and transparent across the business – both of which make me feel like a trusted, valued member of the team!
What team(s) are you directly involved with and how do you ensure you all connect as a fully distributed team?
I’m a member of the services team, but I work really closely with a number of our other teams. We’re constantly in contact, discussing work, asking questions, but also catching up about evening plans or our weekends. Our team also has an informal chat on Friday mornings, which has been great for getting to know everyone.
What is it like starting a new job remotely?
I was already working from home pre-pandemic, so I’m quite used to this! The great thing about Talis is, even though we all work remotely, the team is constantly talking to one another, and you can always jump on a quick call to figure things out if you have to.
When you are not at work, how do you take time-out?
I’m a big fan of the cinema so you can find me there quite a lot. I also walk all the time, and I have a PS5 I’m trying to spend less time with. On the weekends, you can normally find me anywhere that sells coffee.
Where can Talis Elevate users connect with you?
I can be found on my LinkedIn profile and on Twitter, but I encourage any Talis Elevate customers or users who need support in making the most of their Elevate subscription, to email me.
