New student list view: an update

Accessibility student experience

At Talis Insight Europe 2017, we revealed a new student list view for Talis Aspire reading lists. Since then, we have been working on a beta programme with a handful of customers, to get it ready for roll-out.

In September, we got in touch with customers to let them know that the first stage of the beta programme was a success and that we would be scaling up the programme, turning on the new list interface for larger groups of students.

Now, with several universities from our beta phase already using the new list view refresh with students, we have enabled 35 universities so far to access the new list view for a staff side review and consider what their roll-out might look like. We are managing the roll-out process with customers on an individual basis, to ensure requirements of each institution are met.

In early 2018, we will be enabling more universities for a staff side review and will be reaching out to those institutions when this is available for them.

We are pleased to say that the new student list view fully supports the embedding of sections within module pages in the Learning Management System via LTI, as well as full list embedding. We understand that this is important for our academics and students and our beta programme participants have been enabling this feature to allow them to get more from their lists.

The video below gives a more detailed look at the new student list view. You will see a sleeker and more modern look and feel, along with new design elements such as the more prominent display of book jackets.

We have adapted the list to improve the overall experience, by providing additional information on each item, without needing to leave the list page. Notes and ‘reading intentions’ made by students are easier to set and view, also without needing to leave the list page by using a drop-down menu.

If you’d like to find out more about the ways we have developed reading lists for mobile, improved performance and ensured accessibility best practices, watch this video from our development team.

So, what’s next?

As a continuation of the new list view improvements, we are working on the list edit functionality. As we start to release those features, we will be working with universities that already have new list view access to enable new list edit features at a time to suit their rollout to academics.

If you have any questions about this update, or if you are interested in working with us in this beta phase, please raise a support case to speak to the Talis Services Team. We have also written an article containing FAQs on the List View Refresh.

If you are not yet a Talis customer, please email Paul Dibble (paul.dibble@talis.com), who will be able to provide you with more information on our new interface.
