Reading List of the Week – Making of the Modern World, Brunel University, London

This week’s Reading List of the Week is from Brunel University, London.

Making of the Modern World (PX1604) by academic Hannah Whittaker is a module within the History Department. The list was created by the lecturer and is labelled as an ‘indicative list’ with a note from the lecturer encouraging students to do their own research outside of the list.

When speaking to academics, we often hear that they feel the list is a great starting off point and provides the key information to the student, making it easier for them to use other library services for their own additional research.

The list has 349 items, which is common in schools such as history when there are many different subject areas covered within one module. The sections in the list create structure and divide up the items by topic.

Within each section, there are multiple Online Resources. This is beneficial to students, as it makes the list seem more manageable. They can click straight through to the Online Resources and read or download these from any device or location. Other items are only available from the library, so having these two different options can help students manage their time and fit their studying around a schedule that suits them.

This list was created for around 100 students and since its creation 6 months ago has had 1435 page views and 802 total item clicks.
