Our Reading List of the Week is Communication and Engagement from Manchester Metropolitan University.
This list is MMU’s top performing list of 15/16 with over 1500 unique page views. This could be contributed to many factors, but the things that stand out are the simple layout and the ease of access, as most items can be accessed online.
This is particularly important for this module, as the library staff at MMU explained: “The unit is for a course which is taught remotely, called Step Up to Social Work. Students are working in placements around the country and rarely, if ever, come to campus, so it is essential that the reading list is used to provide access to mostly electronic resources and is kept accurate and up-to-date, as students will not be able to visit the Library in person”.
The subject librarian for this list worked with the unit leader to embed reading list items within Moodle using the plugin, this makes access even easier for students.
The layout is simple and straightforward for students to understand. There are 2 sections, ‘essential reading’ and ‘further reading’ making the importance for each resource clear.
