Impact of TEF and proposed sector changes on academic libraries, Liz Jolly | Talis Insight Europe 2016
On Day Two of Talis Insight Europe 2016, Liz Jolly, Chair of SCONUL and Library Director at Teesside University gave her keynote on The “Impact of Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and proposed sector changes on academic libraries” which covered many of the key social, economic and pedagogic themes from within UK Higher Education at the moment.
Liz discussed the Higher Education Green Paper, reflecting on the key points and explaining what changes we should expect to see and how this might affect librarians’ roles within the library and also their wider role within the institution.
The academic library sits at the centre between resources, space and staff who provide services and support. Liz made it clear that the learner should be at the heart of everything, from providing information to enabling communication from librarian to academic and providing a space for learning.
Liz explained that although the library was once a building, it has now expanded with the ever growing use of digital resources and communication. Technology today enables and underpins everything that the library does.
Liz’s presentation ended with some advice, imploring librarians to take a look at what works within their institution and what works best for their students, rather than falling back on traditional librarian perspectives. It was suggested that the librarian role is very cooperative and that collaborative working in partnership with other departments within the university is crucial.
