How Talis supported Deakin University in moving from a legacy system to Talis Aspire Digitised Content

Deakin University decided to upgrade their Talis Aspire Reading Lists system to include Talis Aspire Digitised Content. Talis helped them to port existing scanned copyright cleared PDF documents in a legacy Equella system to their new system.

The Challenge

The legacy Equella system hosted the PDFs, which were linked to directly from over 5000 items in the Talis Aspire Reading Lists system. Each of these documents needed to be imported into the new system as live requests. This would ensure that the documents are accessible via an embedded player directly in the reading lists, giving the students a seamless experience.

How did we do it?

Talis used data from Talis Aspire Reading List items which linked to their old Equella system to construct requests for loading into Talis Aspire Digitised Content. The PDFs for each request were loaded, packed and the resulting copyright cleared scans were then linked to the corresponding items on lists ready for use by students. This saved Deakin University from having to go through each reading list item, manually request a digitisation and then manually upload each PDF.

Result

The students at Deakin University can now access their copyright cleared scans directly within their reading lists. Academics are able to raise new digitisation requests directly within the reading lists system, quickly. And the library is able to manage and deliver their copyright cleared scans in an efficient and compliant manner.
