Paul Miller Presents on 'Moving from the Web of Documents to a Web of Data' at the University of Cambridge - 14 October 2007

A guest of Peter Murray-Rust and his team, Paul Miller visited Cambridge recently and amongst other things, shared some of Talis' emerging ideas around the role that semantic technologies and Web 2.0 can play in taking us toward the 'Web of Intentions' (with kudos to John Battelle).

GRDDL - Superglue for the Web of Data

12 October 2007

Talis is delighted to announce its participation in the development and delivery of GRDDL (Gleaning Resource Descriptions from Dialects of Languages) from The Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C).

As of July 2007 GRDDL, a new specification from the W3C, is set to become an important mainstay of Semantic Web developments such as and the Talis Platform. Ian Davis, Chief Technology Officer and Director at Talis, and Danny Ayers, Platform Community Manager of Talis are active members of the W3C Working Group. Ian Davis is the acting editor of the Primer.

GRDDL describes a set of techniques for interpreting data contained in traditional HTML and XML documents (ie, most web pages today) in a form that makes it directly usable on the Semantic Web. By promotion of the GRDDL specification to Recommendation status, W3C are saying that it is technically sound and mature enough for Web-scale deployment.

The publication of the GRDDL document suite is the culmination of many years work and discussion in the Semantic Web community, with Ian's development of Embedded RDF being a notable landmark. GRRDL uses namespaces and compatibility with the Resource Description Framework (RDF) to link to algorithms for extracting the data in a document. For Talis Platform users, this means they are able to automatically extract searchable RDF metadata from their existing web content with very little effort.

Ian Davis, Chief Technology Officer and Director, Talis comments “Talis believes that GRDDL represents one of the most important steps along the road to the Semantic Web.  It provides a very simple yet extraordinarily powerful mechanism to uplift documents into the web of data.  Talis intends to fully support GRDDL in our Semantic Web Platform, allowing our customers to automatically extract searchable RDF metadata from their existing content with very little effort.”

Danny Ayers, Platform Community Manager, Talis comments “Talis’ involvement in paving the way for the next generation of the Web with W3C has been a fantastic experience, a real milestone for The Talis Platform.”
