In this Talking with Talis podcast Richard Wallis meets Ed Vaizey, Conservative MP and Shadow Minister for Culture.

The next UK general election is probably only a couple of years away and there is a serious possibility that we could see a change of governing party. Against this background Ed Vaizey, Conservative MP for Wantage & Didcot and Shadow Minister for Culture is beginning to shape his thoughts and future policy with respect to libraries.

This podcast conversation, recorded in Ed Vaizey’s office in the Houses of Parliament, explores Ed’s thinking as to the way Government should influence library services provided by local authorities; is the MLA as an organisation the appropriate way to promote libraries at a national level; and even is the Department of Culture the right place for libraries to be represented.

With a guest appearance of Big Ben, chiming the hour, this is an interesting insight into the thoughts of a senior opposition politician on the future of libraries.

Ed Summers joins Richard Wallis in this latest Talking with Talis podcast. Ed has recently been active in exposing Library of Congress Subject Heading data as Linked Data using Semantic Web technologies and RDF, through his experimental service at lcsh.info.

In the latter part of 2007 he conducted surveyed the opinions of libraries, which was published just a few days ago.

Richard Wallis discusses the survey with him, which attracted some 1,700 responses from 47 countries, the results and what they may be telling us about the current state of library automation.

Zotero, is a simple free web browser plug-in for capturing and organizing citations and other web resources. The Zotero project has its home at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia. Trevor discusses the plug-in tool, its use and the community that supports it. We then move on to future releases of which will include access to servers, and hence the development of shared data.

Tim's history is as an author and bookseller - he was with WH Smith, and became Managing Director of Waterstone's.

Over the last few years he has become very well known for having strong opinions about, and proposals for, the way the public library service in England should be structured and run. Tim produced the report "Who's in charge - Responsibility for the Public Library Service" in 2004, which sparked much debate, that is still rumbling on today.

Diane has been associated with library metadata standards, such as Dublin Core and RDA for many years.
